Durgin Finishes on Lead Lap in Busch North Debut
Mark Durgin and the #19 Triple Crown Racing team had a successful NASCAR Busch North debut in Sunday's Freedom 150 at the Lee USA Speedway. Durgin recorded a 13th-place finish in the #19 Willow Laboratories Chevrolet.
Durgin qualified 18th of the 27 cars in attendance for the season opening event, which was the third quickest of the seven rookies in the field. On lap three, Durgin avoided a multiple car wreck in turn two and dropped back to the 20th position. After several green flag laps, Durgin was running lap times comparable to the leaders and moved up three positions in the first sixty laps.
On lap 66, most of the lead lap cars pitted and the Triple Crown team performed their first ever pit stop together. The team was quick enough in changing tires and adding fuel to advance five positions on pit road.
Durgin was battling with Paul Wolfe for the 12th position on lap 103 when Wolfe made contact with a lapped car. That car spun and the #19 car was caught up in the wreck, losing several positions and causing minor damage to the front end of the Durgin's car.
A pit stop was made to assess the damage, which was mostly cosmetic, and Durgin continued on to the finish without losing a lap. The rookie driver had a solid performance and was in the 13th position at the end of the event.
Durgin was very happy with the performance of the team.
"This was our first race with a rookie driver and a rookie team and I'm ecstatic to finish on the lead lap and run as well as we did," he said after the race. "We can really build on this. It gives us a great outlook for the rest of the year. The car was awesome on long runs and we could have finished in the top ten without all of the late race cautions."
The next event for the Willow Laboratories race team will be Friday, May 9th at the Stafford Motor Speedway in Connecticut. |
